Your Smoothie Guide

In full transparency, I am generally a warm-breakfast kind of gal. But I’ve been known to whip up a smoothie post-workout, especially in the summer when it’s hot. However, many of my friends tell me they “just don’t feel like breakfast” in the morning, so they’ll make a smoothie to take with them and have when they get to work. So if that’s your jam, keep reading.

One mistake people make when it comes to smoothies is not making a blend that contains adequate protein, fiber, and fat. When that happens, people feel hungry relatively soon after consuming. To avoid this, it’s important to make sure your smoothie is more like a meal than a snack. Think breakfast in a cup. If you’re not getting at least ~30g of protein per smoothie, it won’t hold you. You also need fiber and healthy fats to stabilize your blood sugar. No more blending frozen fruit with water and ice and considering it breakfast!

Here’s a simple formula below for making a smoothie into a meal. Customize ingredients to suit your taste and mood!

Add the following ingredients to your blender in this order:

  • Milk, nut milk, coconut water, or plain water.

  • One serving of your favorite protein powder to equal 30 grams or more. A basic vanilla flavor is a good start.

  • A tablespoon of a fiber booster such as ground flaxseeds, chia seeds, or oat bran.

  • One tablespoon of a healthy fat like almond butter or peanut butter. Measure! These can really increase your calorie intake if you’re not careful. Stick to one tablespoon per smoothie.

  • Half a cup to one cup of spinach for a healthy measure of vitamins and iron.

  • One cup frozen fruit (berries, cherries, bananas, pineapple, and mango are great choices).

  • Ice cubes to your liking.

Blend away. Pour into a glass and enjoy!
